Ben I think you misunderstood what I said.
The error "wine: Call from 0x57d241e0 to unimplemented function
gdi32.dll.DIB_CreateDIBSection"
is an invalid error. It's caused by incorrect modification of Wine. This error
means that something (modified ddraw.dll.so) calls this function but it's not
available.
It _is_ an internal Wine function and it has been removed few days ago.

Please send further comments to bug 4009; I'm subscribed to that bug but not
this one. There have actually been multiple issues (I think at least 3 or 4, at
least one of which also existed on some windows versions) in the past that have
prevented wa from starting properly, and unfortunately that bug applies to all
of them. The current problem is that when you start wa, you cannot see the
menus; that is what the hacked ddraw.dll is meant to work around; problems with
this work-around are not problems in wine.
Please remove the hacked ddraw.dll. If it still crashes, you're seeing another
issue. If it runs but fails to draw the frontend, it's bug 4009.

The error causing bug 4009 to crash doesn't look anything like the error causing
this one to crash, hell, the window doesn't even appear using this version of Wine.

I think it's a case of app using builtin instead of native (caused by that patch).
Which tells me you might be using an invalid overrides that came from winetools.
What you should do is to get +loaddll trace from before and after the patch in
question. And compare them to see which builtin dlls are now loaded instead of
native.

I think that's what the author meant to do...
But IMHO this is an invalid bug.

Please close this bug, as it's not a bug in itself bug a problem with a
work-around for bug 4009; I recommended the mixing of wine versions because that
wouldn't adversely affect other applications and didn't require users to build
wine themselves (though they always had that option). I knew ddraw would be
replaced, but I expected the old version to keep working for at least a while
longer. The function is apparently no longer used in wine and not needed by any
windows programs, so it's not a wine bug.
Since the old way of working around bug 4009 no longer works, any further
information on this problem should go there (maybe this should be resolved as a
duplicate of that bug).
