I still don't see how is that Wine's bug and not microsoft's?
Several of last posts indicated that this behavior exactly matches that of the
native.

Any messages in the terminal?
This sounds like the known kernel change that affected number of apps, including
Wine (read broke). Try to renice Wine processes. It might help.
And please provide the lint to the application you are testing.
As well as enter it into appDB.

What you reproduced is the correct _intended_ behavior. Wine already has ie's
replacement.
So this is not a bug, this is by design. If you want to run native ie, you will
have to override number of Wine's dlls.

Summary: ie6 installs now, but doesn't work...
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.15.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: NEW
Keywords: download
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: dank(a)kegel.com
I removed ~/.wine, and installed ie6 with exactly wine-0.9.15 plus
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-June/027630.html
(careful, you have to run 'autoconf' after that patch).
The first time I tried running ie6setup.exe, I ran into bug 5409,
but just rerunning setup got me past the failure.
I was able to finish setup with only a few annoying warnings
(I had to click 'ok' on one error box about copying a crl file).
But the resulting ie won't display anything. Wine says
"Could not load Mozilla. HTML rendering will be disabled"
just as described here
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-devel/2006-June/048173.html
Installing the mozilla activex control helped, but at this
point a light went on, and I realized I'm still running Wine's builtin
iexplore.exe!
So I tried setting iexplore.exe and iexplore to 'native' with winecfg.
Oddly, that had no effect; I'm still getting a window titled
"Wine Internet Explorer"
when I run wine iexplore.exe in
~/.wine/drive_c/Program Files/Internet Explorer
This is odd, given that I see
trace:module:load_dll Loaded module L"C:\\Program Files\\Internet
Explorer\\IEXPLORE.EXE" (native) at 0x400000
Setting shdocvw native didn't even get me a window; Wine complains
err:ole:CoGetClassObject class {a5e46e3a-8849-11d1-9d8c-00c04fc99d61} not registered
(That uuid is identified as "Microsoft Browser Architecture" on a few sites,
for what it's worth.)
So, now that ie6 installs (yay), how are we supposed to use it?

I'm running exactly wine-0.9.15 plus
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-June/027630.html
(careful, you have to run 'autoconf' after that patch).
The first time I tried running ie6setup.exe, I ran into this bug.
Adding "207.46.20.60 www.microsoft.com" to my /etc/hosts didn't help.
Retrying once worked, though; I was able to finish setup
with only a few annoying warnings (I had to click 'ok' on one error
box about copying a crl file).
The resulting ie doesn't actually work, but that's another story.

Jordan,
| I'm not asking you to "support ies4linux."
ies4linux changes Wine configuration a lot, and it's hard for us to trace the
changes. Even if we know exact changes made, there will be native DLL used for
particular app. Most of Wine devs also give no support for this mode of using Wine.
| In fact, your own instructions say I should use ies4linux to install IE before
| I even try to install WMP.
You should consider that "we" are not one person. Every community is a more or
less differentiated system :)
Thank you, Jordan, for noticing this. I've already located AppDB page you have
in mind, I hope.
| Why am I trying to install WMP 9? Because I want to install Launchcast and
| WMP 9 is required. But I'm not sure why I have to justify this anyway.
Ok, that reason is fine.
And letting experienced developers to know your reasons can make them able to
give you a more exact advice about how to get Launchcast running (with or
without native DLLs -- it's hard to guess without trying).
Imagine you find installing WMP really helfull for your app. Then you just need
to find appropriate registry key and files (filename) changes, which makes your
app happy. And tell us about them in the report. Long story version of should
follow in a next my reply.
| There's a whole section of your website already dedicated to getting WMP 9 to
| work, and now I'm getting unfriendly replies from people?
That's because some members of Wine users (appdb) community don't know right way
to install WMP9. In our case I'd like to contact Alexander Nicolaysen Sørnes to
ask him to transfer all changes being made by "ies4linux" into plain-text script
(on WMP9 page).
| Way to treat the newbie. Sheesh.
Well, maybe yes, but every newbie has to go through a starting point of
understanding that a users community consists of different people with different
abilities. And not all of them are able to do a job which meets primary goals
of Wine. Right? In fact they are asking for help.
Just don't associate such replies with negative emotions of an author, if you
can. And you already has made a good thing by making us notice this conflict of
interests, thanks once more :)
