I don't think that's likely to help since it worked before 0.9.16 (but I guess
it could..maybe the new ddraw is choosing the wrong window to draw to).
You could try setting "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Wine\Direct3D" to "gdi". If
the program requests 3D (as it appears to based on the log, although I'm not
sure I know how to read that properly), the new ddraw will use the opengl
backend, which isn't complete. The gdi backend is more like what it was before.

This problem is still present in Wine 0.9.18 and current GIT (2006-08-07). The
game displays a black screen for the duration of the intro filsm (which can be
aborted with Esc), and then crashes.
