I guess Simonas has experimented with the HOWTO a bit (or such). Today I had updated my nVidia binary drivers to 8762 from 8178 and had got very similar effect. With earlier drivers my Xorg was able to use only one video mode that I predefined in xorg.conf, lets call it 800x600__. But XRandR extension was able to switch to lots of standard modes by itself then (including std 640x480). Newest nVidia driver passes only that predefined mode to Xorg or particularly to XRandR. Hence, XRandR is finding only 800x600 mode and Wine fails to switch to 640x480...
