Changing graphics modes and trying stuff I stumbled on something that seems to
work. Using winecfg you can let the display manager handle the game, and set
the display manager to provide an 800x600 window.
This reached the opening menu, which is to say, it got past the point at which
the bug has previously appeared. I have yet to determine if this means it is
playable. respectfully

Seems like a regression in shdocvw. Assigning to Jacek. Also, winedbg isn't
very helpful either.

Created an attachment (id=3714)

tried similar environment on different hardware
This dump is from an IBM Thinkpad with 2GB ram running a 2+GHz P4 and ubuntu
6.06.
It uses an intel 810 chipset while the previous one was a geForce.
It displays slightly differently than the previous one, but occurs in the same
place in the installation sequence and looks like the same thing on the
surface.
The ddraw prelude to the crash seems instructive.
Was there something about limiting the use of the ddraw 9 instructions?
Anyway, still not working.

I tried setting virtual desktop mode in winecfg, didn't seem
to change anything. But I can see there might be some fighting
between the app and the window manager - the taskbar pops
up after a second. Well, I'm no expert, either, guess we'll just
have to wait for someone who knows these issues to have a look.

I don't see why it wouldn't be possible if the window manager is controlling the
windows, something like the splash keeps being redrawn over the
messagebox/window trying to pop up. I think it's possible for a window to not
show up in the taskbar for some reason or other, but then again, I'm not an
expert on this area, thus the "sounds like." The symptoms are similar to other
bug reports where that is a problem, so I thought I'd share. I think running
the installer in virtual mode will help. If no window pops up, then this is
probably not the case.

That wouldn't explain the apparant constant repainting (if that's
what the repeating logfile section indicates), would it?
I did look for a hidden window using gnome's alt-tab; there
didn't seem to be any.
