I configured my WINE according to the instructions on the UESP wiki and changed
to fbo rather than pbuffer, but I still get the vomit green from dispelling
bound armour.

I can also confirm that "nice -n 19 Steam.exe" allows updating Steam, in my
case the October 4th 2007 update. I tested it on Wine version 0.9.45, and it
worked just fine. After restarting Steam (not automatically, but manually) it
did complain something about some other program using the registry and it
failed. Next time it launched just fine.

Does the availability of XRandR help Wine with this problem? All new
distributions will use it per default.

I would call it an enhancement. Since you stated yourself fbo and default works
just fine.

Don't use pbuffers. Use either default config (backbuffer) or fbo. Pbuffers are
more broken then anything else.

patch
The 'rhs' was added by Oleview when it couldn't find any string - for propput
functions ITypeInfo::GetNames returns a shorter than the number of parameters.
However that doesn't seems to be a problem for OPAS. What was a problem was
that the functions were of type FUNC_PUREVIRTUAL instead of FUNC_DISPATCH. This
patch fixes it however I haven't yet checked if it's 100% correctly. With it
OPAS starts under Wine.

is it related with the bug 9896 ?
