this bug is fixed in wine-0.9.40
as discussed in irc there is indeed a performance hit to about 1/3 of the normal
in station fps when switching to the map while windows keeps the fps at about 2/3
but the visualisation is correct now

Summary: Silent Hunter III: Fires and smoke visible only with
view zoomed far out.
Product: Wine
Version: CVS
Platform: PC
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-directx-d3d
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: knan-wine(a)anduin.net
In the game, ongoing fire and smoke effects are usually not visible, only when
you switch to external camera and zoom far out. I'll attach two screenshots to
illustrate.
There's a fixme triggered in d3d:IWineD3DSwapChainImpl_Present that looks
suspicious, but might be a red herring. Will attach a plain log as well.
Visible engine smoke is rather important in order to spot ships.

Then please tell what information should I provide. I'm not familiar with wine
debugging. I only reported what I was able to observe.

Using wine-0.9.39
Running wine's native notepad, I switched to the israel lyx keyboard layout and
typed the letter Qoph.
I got an error similar to the one reported above:
warn:keyboard:X11DRV_ToUnicodeEx no char for keysym 0CF7 (hebrew_qoph) :
warn:keyboard:X11DRV_ToUnicodeEx virtKey=45, scanCode=12, keycode=1A, state=2010
The message is only shown when warnings are enabled with WINEDEBUG=warn+all

Patch has been committed into current git. Can you test and reopen if it's not
fixed?
