HAHA VICTORY. I reviewed the logs here, and I had CSS on my friends account,
but not mine, I noticed his had didn't have a licenses key, whereas my account
did in HKCU/software/valve/steam/users/<uid>/licenses. I deleted mine and BOOM
HEADSHOT! (LOL WUT)

Andrew, many thanks for the additional information.
(Since this bug was caused by one of my patches I was interested to see that.)
Closing.

This crash is not necessarily unique to Wine; in XP many have complained of
similar crashes, and I've seen the game crash while loading graphics before.
v1.05 of CK is supposed to fix (most) such crashes. On my system (Ubuntu Feisty
w/ Wine 0.9.44, CK 1.05) this crash hasn't happened. Has anyone observed this
crash in v1.05a of CK?

Nah, if wine's itss is incomplete, it's a bug in wine,
not a worksforme.

OK. But users are going to be a bit confused
about how to move and resize the windows. At
least on Feisty, it's hard (you have to futz
with the lower right hand corner in a nonintuitive
way). But I guess that's a separate issue I can
file later once I understand it better.

Did you try to change the Path where the Game should go?
Had this Issue if trying to install on my D:
which is mapped to /usr/local/games,
after changing the Letter to e: it works to install
Silkroad in E:\SilkRoad.
Before trying around with that,
try to install in default folder - should work.
BTW: The Silkroad-Installer works even with 200-/XP-Mode,
so it's safe to switch to 98 after install is complete.

The patch that fixes this bug is commit
ac98e0c07535af4a373c0af343498903e2ff42a6:
"winex11: Switch windows to managed mode in SetWindowPos instead of at creation
time."
I have determined that, with the associated app, the reported oscillations are
clearly and consistently evident prior to this patch, but not subsequently.
