I have this same problem on "The First Encounter" and "The Second Encounter".
The server doesn't have to be dedicated either. Just joining any local network
game will fail when the percentage gets to 97% to 99%.
Using wine is pretty much the only solution to play these games as the "fall
through the floor" bug on the Linux version makes them unplayable on Linux
IMHO.
I am using wine 0.9.44.

That's it! I downloaded radium mp3 codec, installed it, searched for that acm
file in system32 and set it as override file.

Still there in 0.9.44-git. Fires, smoke, bow wake (particle effects) disappear
when zooming close but are visible from long range.
Any specific logs that would be useful?

Seems to have been fixed in current git. Scenery background is slow, but
perfectly functional.

It appears that this bug was fixed on 2007-08-20. This bug is not present in
Wine-0_9_44.

Could this be the same root cause as 9512 (i.e. are they duplicates)?

The tool windows really should be managed, that's not going to change. And yes,
that fixes the bug because the resize is now done by the window manager instead
of being done internally in Wine.
The problem with resizing inside Wine is that we need to grab the X server, and
depending on what the app does during the resize this is quite likely to
deadlock.
Wine has no business resizing top level X windows, that's the job of the window
manager.

In wine-0.9.44, those child windows appear to be managed,
which seems wrong, but however inconvenient it is,
it did seem to stop the hang. Once those windows are
fixed again to no longer be managed (please?), the
bug might uncloak.

Bug still present in 0.9.44. Is this a dupe of bug 2891 (where a fix was
proposed)?
