I'm having no problems at all with this, and haven't had problems certainly for
the last couple of months of Wine releases - is anyone else still affected on
latest version?

Sorry, I should note - I'm getting the following line spewed out about 20 times
to the command line when running the game:
fixme:cursor:CURSORICON_LoadFromFile No support for .ani cursors.
...if that's a clue to anyone who knows what it might be?

Is the original EDWinXP 1.50 trial still available for download? The linked URL
has a download for EDWinXP 1.61.

Setting OffscreenRenderingMode to fbo (see
http://wiki.winehq.org/UsefulRegistryKeys) seems to eliminate those brown
shadows (among other things) and also the cause for the crash. At least as far
as I tested, it doesn't crash with fbo.

It was easier for me to reproduce the desktop file creation
problem using Blocklist Manager,
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=4566
To wit:
winetricks vbrun60
wine BLMInstall277.exe (and uncheck the optional scary items)
This produces four instances of
fixme:menubuilder:SaveIconResAsXPM Unsupported color depth 24-bit
There seems to be a proposed fix in
http://www.winehq.org/pipermail/wine-patches/2006-January/023675.html
(better link for patch:
http://marc.info/?l=wine-patches&m=113805771823486&q=raw )
Doesn't apply cleanly anymore. Could somebody have a look
and see if this would solve the remaining problem?
