Wine doesn't directly support running IE6.
See http://www.tatanka.com.br/ies4linux/
or http://codeweavers.com for ways to run ie6 on Linux using Wine.

I doubt Wine is protecting iexplorer.exe in any way. Perhaps the installer
detects the OS version and acts differently when it's set to 2000 or XP. Just
for references, where are you downloading IE 6 from?

I think you shouldn't compile new wine, just install it from official wine
repository - see http://www.winehq.org/site/download-deb for information how to
add official wine software repository and install wine (AFAIK you are using
Debian 4.0 or another Debian/Ubuntu based OS, if not - see
http://www.winehq.org/site/download for packages for other Linux distributions)
Soon I will need to run one application, written with VFP9, so, we can work
together :)
If you need any other help - just write here.

I don't have the time to do any extensive testing right now, but here's what I
have so far:
The specific error messages have disappeared, but the symptoms are the same.
The program immediately exits when run.
However, while searching for a demo version I discovered there's a patch for
this game which is apparently necessary to run it under Windows XP. With that
update, the game runs. It then crashes later on with an infamous ???Unknown
Exception dialog. I guess that means this bug can be closed.

It seems, that when Windows version is set to 2000, it creates iexplore.exe
correctly.

Can somebody answer me, if this is not desirable behaviour - if the wine is
protecting iexplore.exe from being rewrited?

Hm, I tryed to install IE6 under Wine 0.9.60, and iexplore.exe is not created
in Program Files/Internet Explorer, so it seems that this bug remained. I will
try older versions of Wine, if this is regression.

No, and .net is not going to be fixed for 1.0, so deferring.
