Hello,
--- quote ---
I did, it was related to the Direct3D crash. I'm was talking about the original
bug with restoring game saves.
--- quote ---
Sorry I missed that.
Maybe that bug should be split into two bugs because the IDirect3D3 issue is
actually blocking the first one.
The backtrace from initial bug reporter indeed shows a crash in a module named
"mask"…

So your finding of "KingsQuestMask" as application compatibility item indicates
the game might be really broken or relying on undocumented behaviour.

Hello,
--- quote ---
C:\Windows\AppPatch\AcSpecfc.dll in XP and above has a function named
"KingsQuestMask" that patches the game somehow, has anyone taken a look to see
what it does and use that as a starting point? I have very little experience
with disassembly but I think it was related to file handles.
--- quote ---
"Ac" is probably "application …
[View More]compatibility".
Windows has so called "application shims" that allow gazillion of broken/bad
behaving apps to run on newer Windows versions.
At runtime application signatures are matched in a database and application
specific shims (dlls) are loaded that hook APIs and redirect it to alternate
implementation.
These implementations carry specific workarounds/hacks.
And no, reverse engineering of Windows dlls is not acceptable, it's standard
Wine policy.
Wine has a black box/clean room engineering approach.
The presence of this "KingsQuestMask" shim might indicate that this game is
somehow broken and/or relies on old or undocumented API behaviour which
requires a specific workaround in newer Windows versions.
I'm not sure but did you read my comment #19 ?
I already did an analysis some time ago and gave a possible hint.
Regards

Bug #: 30582
Summary: SW Knights of the old Republic: Securom kicks in,
recognizes Wine as Emulator
Product: Wine
Version: 1.5.0
Platform: x86-64
OS/Version: Linux
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org

[View More]Classification: Unclassified
SW KotOR – patched to 1.03 – fails to start with a SecuROM error ("Conflict
with Disc Emulator Software detected. See www.securom.com/emulation for more
details").
This seems to be a known problem on SecuROMs end ([0]), as they provide people
who complain about this with a link to [1], when the instructions of [0]
failed/you provided them with a diagnosis. Hence I'm not entirely sure, whether
this is Wine's fault or a overzealous SecuROM.
Anyway, if you need something else, please let me know.
