Without any application-side optimizations, wineserver CPU was around 95%. We then tried a few application-side workarounds to reduce the number of real Winsock calls reaching Wine. These are not fully clean or generally reliable solutions, but the results are interesting: Reducing real recv() calls with application-side buffering lowered wineserver CPU from ~95% to ~75%. About 80% of recv() calls were served from the application buffer. Then reduced real select() calls by using application-side readiness emulation when buffered data was already available. About 60% of select() calls were avoided/emulated. This lowered wineserver CPU further to ~63%. Keeping those changes and adding a small 1 ms delay before the remaining real select() calls lowered wineserver CPU to ~50%. This seems to support the idea that the bottleneck is strongly tied to the number of socket I/O / readiness operations that reach wineserver. However, these are application-side hacks involving buffering, readiness emulation, and throttling. Other than that, Legacy DirectX Games is starting without problem. (but weave deinterlacing. why?) Resetting the prefix didn’t make a difference, and since I have no idea how to fix this, I’m at a loss. It looks like ntdll is causing the problem, but to be honest, I'm not really sure what's going on. Hellfire 1 (gog) and 3 (hellfire) crash immediately after intro videos but classic shows popup window "Please insert the Diablo CD into your CD-ROM drive and press 'OK'." for both wine 11.9 and 10.0. Classic popup window request for CD insert is all black for 10.0 and all white for 11.9 but clicking 'OK' reveals Diablo graphics behind for both of them. Clicking 'Cancel' opens new popup window with msg "problem occured while trying to load a file: diabdat.mpq" DIABAT.MPQ exists in root dir but same pop error occurs regardless of mapping game root dir as A:, D:, and/or E: drive via winecfg. Each game version has its own ddraw.dll: ./drive_c/GOG Games/Diablo/ddraw.dll (classic/orig) ./drive_c/GOG Games/Diablo/dx/ddraw.dll (gog-mod) ./drive_c/GOG Games/Diablo/hellfire/ddraw.dll winecfg lib ddraw native (windows) override fixes crashes for 1 (gog) and 3 (hellfire) but breaks 2 (classic) which shows a blank popup titled "Direct Draw Error" which prevent launch. Therefore 2 (classic) seems to only works with wine ddraw.dll despite it being shipped with its own (native) ddraw.dll. But without CD fix its unclear how compatible 2 (classic) is with wine ddraw. Game rendering is broken for both x11 and wayland for both wine 11.9 and 10.0 in similar ways. X11 renders everything fullscreen vs wayland which renders intro videos fullscreen but then main menu at top-left corner of screen. wine-10.0 refreshes the menu and displays it fullscreen after some seconds vs wine-11.9 which remains at top-left corner and all white and therefore difficult to use with mouse vs keyboard. In the later version (one with visible errors), the glyphs are far more micromanaged and badly so: they get pushed out of position, pushing some of them out of the bounding box. That might be a wine bug. 2. ...you know, wine might have accidentally discovered a bug in your app. Well, that or even wine 8.7 has a bug, just one of a different sort: note that - for example - 'CLÁUSULA DECIMA' is present in both logs twice: at (172, 3136) and later at (172, 234), but in the 8.7 pdf file the second one is not present (not invisible, but simply not there). -- Do not reply to this email, post in Bugzilla using the above URL to reply. The macro engine process is spawned and connects to wpwin via DDE successfully, but a single CoCreateInstance call required to dispatch the macro fails, and WordPerfect then abandons the operation without any user-visible message. This has been confirmed on both: - WordPerfect Office X3 (PerfectScript engine v6), macOS via Sikarugir (a Wineskin-based wrapper) - WordPerfect Office 12 (PerfectScript engine v5), vanilla Wine on Linux Trying a newer Wine engine inside Sikarugir did not change the behavior. Reproducer ---------- 1. Install WordPerfect Office X3 (or Office 12) into a Wine prefix. 2. Launch wpwin13.exe (X3) or wpwin12.exe (Office 12). 3. Tools -> Macro -> Play, choose any supplied .wcm (e.g. EXPNDALL.WCM from ...\Languages\EN\Macros\WPWin\), click Open. 4. Expected: the macro runs. 5. Observed: nothing visible happens. The macro engine launches in the background, connects via DDE, but the macro never executes. Wine is not the proximate cause -- it correctly locates and loads the registered server -- but the server's own code refuses to hand back a class factory. (d) Other CoCreateInstance calls in the same session SUCCEED: {c0e10001-0006-0006-c0e1-c0e1c0e1c0e1} -> ok {c0e10001-0009-0006-c0e1-c0e1c0e1c0e1} -> ok {c0e10004-0001-0006-c0e1-c0e1c0e1c0e1} -> ok Only -0031- fails. This is one specific class in the PerfectFit framework, not a generic load problem. (e) Immediately before DllGetClassObject is called, pfbc130.pfc's DllMain(PROCESS_ATTACH) issues two consecutive anti-debug probes: trace:process:NtQueryInformationProcess (0xffffffffffffffff, 0x0c, ...) trace:process:NtQueryInformationProcess (0xffffffffffffffff, 0x0c, ...) ProcessInformationClass 0x0c is ProcessDebugPort. PerfectFit was Corel's anti-tamper / licensing framework. The probe result is plausibly cached as a flag that gates the class factory for protected CLSIDs. This is a hypothesis -- confirming it requires stepping pfbc130.pfc!DllGetClassObject in winedbg. (f) Side note (probably not the root cause, but worth fixing): Wine's DDEML cannot handle Corel's private DDE clipboard format 0xc0ea used by the wpwin <-> ps130 conversation: fixme:ddeml:WDML_Global2DataHandle Unsupported format (ffffc0ea) for data ..., passing raw information fixme:ddeml:WDML_DataHandle2Global Unsupported format (c0ea) for data ..., passing raw information What this is NOT ---------------- Things ruled out by investigation: - COM registration: the registry has full and correct entries for every PerfectFit CLSID, ProgID, Interface/TypeLib, ProxyStubClsid, and PFBC130/PFOB130/PFQS130/PFSE130/PFDT130/PFVM130 component server, written by Corel's installer. - Wrong DLL registered: pfbc130.pfc *does* contain the failing CLSID in its binary (verified by 16-byte struct grep), along with 42 other CLSIDs in the same Corel-tail family. The registry maps the failing CLSID to the right DLL. - DDE broken: DDE conversations between wpwin and ps130 establish correctly and exchange messages. The Corel-private 0xc0ea format fixme is real but is hit during the conversation, not at setup. - Missing dependency: pfbc130.pfc's DllMain(PROCESS_ATTACH) returns 1 (success). All other DLLs in the dependency chain (MSVCRT, KERNEL32, USER32, GDI32, ADVAPI32, SHELL32, COMCTL32, ole32, OLEAUT32, ThemeManager, CRLUTL114, MFC42) load fine. - DllRegisterServer not run: the prefix has the registration; that's not the issue.
