Splashscreen and toolbar
Windows overlaying strange in CS2 with Wine 0.9.54, see Screenshots for
details. Examples for two cases as attachments.
Splashscreen overlays every other application like terminal, firefox, ...(funky
background is from photoshop main window)
The toolbar on the left side is from Photoshop CS2 which is opened fullscreen
but overlayed by ImageReady CS2 » Photoshop toolbar overlays everything other
Also when working with more than one image, clicking on another image window in
photoshop sets it between otehr windows instead of setting it into foreground
which is very annoying

trace with WINEDEBUG=+tid,+message,+win,+server
Hello,
I've seen this bug a while ago in other apps but ignored it because it was not
easily to reproduce.
Well until recently when I tested some stuff with windbg from "Debugging Tools
for Windows" (Microsoft).
I used debugging tools version 6.8.4.0 and recent GIT
(wine-0.9.49-302-g58b85bb).
Immediately when a child window was opened using toolbar (register, locals, ..
whatever), windbg would become unresponsive, eating most CPU.
Happens in both GUI modes - "floating/docking toolwindow" and "MDI emulation.
Though "MDI emulation" is more obvious, it actually shows the endless
refreshing (window caption).
Attached is WINEDEBUG=+tid,+message,+win,+server log.
Additionally I added a trace message which prints the current queue paint count
(when incremented or fetched) which makes some things easier to spot.
Printed as "inc_queue_paint_count: %d" and "get_message_paint_count: %d".
The window hierarchy is as follows:
--- snip ---
*root*=0x10020
Shell_TrayWnd=0x10022
WinDbgFrameClass=0x10024
DockClass=0x10026
ToolbarWindow32=0x10028
msctls_statusbar32=0x1002a
tooltips_class32=0x1002e
WinBaseClass=0x10030
ToolbarWindow32=0x10032
SysListView32=0x10034
SysHeader32=0x10036
RichEdit20W=0x10038
--- snip ---
After the child windows are created the queue paint count never drops to zero,
resulting in endless WM_PAINT processing.
Maybe some update (region) code path missed or flags problem?
I played a bit with ignoring null region updates and it seemed to help a bit
(preventing endless WM_PAINT loop) though other stuff wasn't drawn properly
then.
Regards

A user complained in
http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/wine/101536-problem-tcp-ip.html
"[Running colasoft mac scan in wine complains
Cannot find any valid ip address...]"
So I downloaded it and tried it.
It found my IP address right away, so that's fine.
But it wasn't able to actually scan for MAC addresses; it
had lots of
fixme:iphlpapi:SendARP (DestIP 0xda01a8c0, SrcIP 0x00000000, pMacAddr
0x7abcc808, PhyAddrLen 0x7abcc7fc): stub
messages. On Linux, at least, the way to do this is
probably to send the packet, wait a millisec, then do
ioctl SIOCGARP. (Or the command arp -n W.X.Y.Z. Or look in /proc/net/arp.)
It'd be cheesy beans to implement, if anybody cares to.

The file open dialog seems to be using a buffer which is too short for multiple
file selection. While Windows itself has this bug/feature, wine's version is
much more annoying since I'm unable to select over 6 files usually (using long
but not excessive names).
A dynamic buffer (with a reasonable limit for security reasons perhaps) would
be preferrable, but even a bigger buffer would help.
I think windows' buffer is 4k.

It arranges the component palettes in the same order in which it read the
values from the registry (even if MSDN exlicitly says not to rely on the order
in which the values are read). We store the values in the alphabetical order to
binsearch them so the palettes under Wine are in alphabetical order instead of
the configured order.
I attach a small test showing that under Windows the values are read in the

"make test" should usually run well.
Right now, it usually fails badly.
Right now, on my machine, it:
put up a modal dialog once (requiring a mouse click),
hung once (requiring a 'wineserver -k'),
dropped me into the debugger once (requiring a 'wineserver -k'),
screwed up my screen resolution once,
and had 22 package failures and 169 individual test failures.

I've written a test program to show several problems with Listviews.
When a Listview has drag & drop enabled, clicking a list item with the mouse
shows the highlight color for only a fraction of a second. The operator cannot
see which list item is selected.
A related problem occurs when clicking a list item checkbox while it is
highlighted. It does not show the tick mark. It appears the checkbox is not
checked but moving the highlight to another list item then shows the checkbox
is checked.
These are only issues when drag & drop is enabled.
These issues are quite serious for anyone wanting to use our radio broadcasting
software on Linux. It's not useable with these problems as the highlighted
track and/or checked track is what will play when the user clicks Play.

Hello,
while playing around with .NET apps I found various shortcomings when it comes
to native backends for certains parts of .NET
One is the state of cryptographic providers (crypt32).
Many .NET apps use either default RSA or DSS provider.
Currently the DSS and enhanced DSS provider are missing, resulting in failure
of several .NET apps.
Would be nice if wine gets DSS provider too.

Hi!
The builtin wnaspi32.dll seems to number SCSI Port IDs 0,1,2,4,8,0x10,....
(like the native linux controller IDs), instead of 0,1,2,3,4,5..... (as
required by ASPI as far as I was told). So every device connected to a SCSI
Port ID larger then 2 is not visible to applications.
At least on my machine I see this numbering in the
HKLM/Hardware/DEVICEMAP/Scsi/
tree. "Scsi Port x" where x=0,1,2,4,8,.....
I tried to run "Easy CD-CA Extractor" and my DVD-Drive is connected to
controller id 4 (which should be 3 in ASPI aspects). Copying the whole tree
from "Scsi Target 4" to "Scsi Target 3" worked.
The developer of "Easy CD-DA Extractor" told me that ASPI requires a
0,1,2,3,4,5,... numbering.

Hi,
First bug report for Wine-hope I tell you enough. First, thanks for all the
work.
I'm trying to run a demo version of an interesting program called Universal
Mechanism. It's developed by a university and is able to solve and simulate
physical systems quite accurately. It's used by companies and researchers, and
is reasonably affordable:
http://umlab.ru/index.htm
The program works, but large parts of the display vanish except when the mouse
pointer is moved over them. Could be used, but tedious. I'd guess it might be
an interesting program for some users, quite a rare type of program, and
useful. Since it runs OK, except UI I wondered if you might be able to
investigate? I don't know which part of wine might be responsible, but I'd
guess one of the accelerated graphics libraries. I'm using Debian Etch, with
your package: 0.9.44~winehq0~debian~4.0-1
I have an nvidia graphics card, and opengl works fine for other apps, via
nvidia driver, again debian package.
If you need more info please ask,
Thanks in advance,
Arthur

It seems like CompareStringW does not work correctly, when using wide/unicode
strings. I first discovered this when I saw that listbox controls sorted
swedish characters (say, LATIN SMALL LETTER A WITH RING ABOVE) side by side
with the base character (LATIN SMALL LETTER A). An example is
http://www.cendio.se/~astrand/wine/40-listbox-sort/list.exe.
The cause seems to be that CompareStringW gives the wrong result. I've created
the small test example
http://www.cendio.se/~astrand/wine/40-listbox-sort/comparestring.exe, with
source available in the same directory. On Windows, the result is that the
string "äpple" is greater than "orange", which is correct. With the latest
Wine CVS version, the result is that "äpple" is lesser than "orange", which is
wrong.

Proposed fix
Recent wine versions abort on startup if the config directory isn't owned by
the user running wine.
This breaks setups where several users share a common wine prefix (e.g. to make
applications that make heavy use of the registry available to several users
without installing them several times) and they have the right access to the
configs through group permissions.
Unless I'm overlooking a better way to do this, it would make more sense to
check proper permissions than to check ownership. I'm attaching a patch that
does that.

Sometimes it gets a bit further and hangs or exits silently after printing
fixme:shell:UnixFolder_IShellFolder2_GetDefaultColumnState stub
Out of paranoia, I copied the installer to c:\ and turned off the z:\
drive to see if the hang was it pawing through all my files, but that didn't
change much.

This one's a bit tricky to set up.
Microsoft Dynamics GP trial's installer wants mdac 2.8.1;
fine, so let the app's installer do that, run twice to
work around bug 5824.
It then needs .net 1.1;
fine, so let the app's installer do that...
that runs into bug 10134. I worked around that by using
native dcom98 to finish the .net install.
OK, so then I run MS Dynamic GP's trial installer again,
expecting it to get past those two known problems and
into a new one. And sure enough, it crashed in activation
context code:

To start up, the app needs mfc40 (which is harder now that

Don't know what happens if you have mfc40, haven't grabbed a copy.

This one was mentioned at the end of bug 5358, but I only just
now got around to isolating it. I ran into this in the context of bug
5358 (Microsoft Dynamics GP Trial). That app comes with dotnetfx.exe,
which fails to install. The problem is a heap corruption or something
in our COM implementation, as it fails slightly faster and cleaner with
WINEDEBUG=warn+heap, and succeeds with native dcom98.
The problem can be reproduced with the .net 1.1 installer downloadable
from Microsoft. This has the same md5 signature as the one on the cdrom.
Oddly, when I first hit this it took ten seconds, the second
time it took half an hour, no idea why the speed difference.
I think it might be WINEDEBUG=warn+heap makes it run slow,
that's another sign of an uninitialized variable.
Here's the script I used to demonstrate the bug. I'll attach fail.log.

Kings Quest 8 - Mask of Eternity crashes on startup with an exception error.
The specific error has been attached. Version 0.9.36 didn't have this problem,

located in a change between version 0.9.36 and 0.9.37. The specific code is
shown below.
wine version 0.9.36, file wine/dlls/ddraw/direct3d.c:
324 d1 = dref;
325 d2 = dref;
326 hr = Callback( (LPIID) &IID_IDirect3DRefDevice,
reference_description, device_name, &d1, &d2, Context);
wine version 0.9.37(and up to version 0.9.45 at least):
327 d1 = dref;
328 d2 = dref;
329 /* The rgb device has the pow2 flag set in the hel caps, but not in
the hal caps */
330 d1.dpcLineCaps.dwTextureCaps &= ~(D3DPTEXTURECAPS_POW2 |
D3DPTEXTURECAPS_NONPOW2CONDITIONAL | D3DPTEXTURECAPS_PERSPECTIVE);
331 d1.dpcTriCaps.dwTextureCaps &= ~(D3DPTEXTURECAPS_POW2 |

332 hr = Callback( (LPIID) &IID_IDirect3DRGBDevice,

I tried commenting out line 330 and 331 in version 0.9.44 and the game ran
without crashing at startup, but there has to be a better way to solve this.

Tab behavior differs from Windows while using Word Viewer 2003's installer.
While this is a trivial matter, I was attempting to write a script using
AutoHotKey to automate testing of the program in Wine/Windows. Since screen
resolution/windows placement can differ very easily, using the keyboard is the
easiest way to make sure the script does what I want. The main difference is
that under Windows, one tab takes me from the license agreement's text to the
checkbox to accept the agreement. Under Wine, it takes me to the cancel button.
Using tab twice under Wine brings me to the checkbox.

WINEDEBUG=+loaddll,warn+all wine FL.exe
FL Studio 7 is professional software for creating music. It works *almost*
perfectly but because of this bug it isn't actually usable: most of its WAV
files do not work and this makes the program useless!
As I have said FL Studio make use of WAV files. Some WAV files are in standard
PCM uncompressed audio format and they plays fine. Others use non-standard WAV
format and fails to play at all. Because of that a lot of effects and sounds
cannot be used.
If I run the program with WINEDEBUG=+loaddll,warn+all I get the following
output when I try to play a "non-standard" WAV file: (see attachment). When I
play standard PCM-encoded WAV file there is no such output. I think this output
gives some useful clues but unfortunately I have almost no knowledge about
Widnows sound API so I cannot fix this myself.
Feel free to ask any additional questions. The program has a demo and it is
almost fully functional (see the URL field).
How to reproduce (instruction by Travis Forghani, with minor changes and
comments for better readability):
1) Click on "Packs" to expand it. Then click on "Basses" to expand it. Next,
click on the "BASS_EfEm_C2"; when you click on the BASS_EfEm_C2 effect, the
sound that is supposed to be created is created. This works because
"BASS_EfEm_C2" is standard PCM encoded WAV file.
2) Click on "RealDrumkits" to expand it. Next, click on "RD_Crash". When you
click on the "RD_Crash" effect, the sound that is supposed to be created is not
created and there is no output via the speakers. This doesn't work because
"RD_Crash" is non-standard WAV. But on clean Windows this works out-of-the-box.

Summary: iTunes 7.3 no longer functions after upgrading Wine to

In Wine versions 0.9.50 and prior, iTunes 7.3 functions. However, when
upgrading to 0.9.51, iTunes 7.3 will no longer function.
A fresh installation of Wine 0.9.51 was installed on my machine, and then
itunes 7.3 installed. iTunes 7.3 still would not run. Reverting back to 0.9.50
would not solve the problem either.
I was only able to solve the problem by reverting to 0.9.50 AND purging my
.wine folder.
Instructions for installing Wine 7.3 can be found at:

When you run it, it locks up your X session, and you have
to do alt-control-backspace to shut down the X server

I've seen this problem in some programs, but not others. Here's one problem
where it happens:
In the Celestia installer, on the initial page, it asks you to accept the GPL
license. By default, the radio button has "do not accept" selected.
On Windows, I can press "alt + a" to select the "accept" radio button. On Wine,
the "accept" button gets focus when I press "alt + a", but the radio button
doesn't get selected.

patch which adds msi.MsiSetExternalUIRecord and
msi.MsiDetermineApplicablePatchesW
Hello,
this (showcase) bug id exists to show/track .NET Framework 3.5 install issues,
e.g. what wine needs to implement/work around.
With VS.NET 2008 and .NET Framework 3.5 released, the Framework 3.5 needs to be
installed first.
Used GIT:
wine --version
wine-0.9.49-331-g7a8eb4c
Prerequisites:
1) set OS config to at least "Windows XP"
2) one volume name (dosdevices/<driveletter>:) must contain "harddisk" or
"ramdisk" and write accessible
cd ~/.wine
mv drive_c harddiskvolume1
cd dosdevices
ln -sf ../harddiskvolume1 c:
The installer then stops at unimplemented msi.MsiSetExternalUIRecord, attached
patch adds simple stub which fixes this.
----
If you downloaded the "small" .NET Framework installer, you now run into a
major showstopper: BITS required
The partial installer depends on: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5713
What is the consensus regarding native BITS and builtin BITS?
Builtin bits might take some time until it gets into usable state.
Native BITS is described here: http://bugs.winehq.org/show_bug.cgi?id=6194
though I haven't looked at it for some time.
Will native BITS considered abandoned then (needs some nasty workarounds)?
----
If you downloaded the full installer some messages seem to indicate BITS is
used in full installer too, but it doesn't seem to harm now.

Interestingly there is some undocumented "BitsOverride" which might indicate a
possibility to revert their interal download manager to standard download
procedures.
The showstopper for full installer seem to be various hotfix installers which
are spawned by main installer.
As example I start with hotfix "Windows Imaging Component update" which gets
extracted by installer into
"c:\<guid>\wcu\dotNetFramework\dotNetFX30\WIC_x86_enu.exe" and tries to run it.
This fails and lets overall installer fail too.
It seems to make various specific checks for operating system version/build.
I only quote checks which seem to fail:

The inf/old catalog file problem...
Anyway one can get around by manually copying these 4 files (WindowsCodecs.dll,
WindowsCodecsExt.dll, WMPhoto.dll, PhotoMetadataHandler.dll) before installtion
into system32.
Extract them from the hotfix installer to have version match.
This seems to work around the hotfix issues/catalog problem.
With the files in place before .NET installation this hotfix is skipped and the
installer runs into:
--- snip ---
wine: Call from 0x7b841450 to unimplemented function
msi.dll.MsiDetermineApplicablePatchesW, aborting
--- snip ---
Attached patch fixes this.
After that it gets further only to stop at another hotfix installer "XPSEPSC" -
the catalog install problem.
So I stop for now because it sucks to work around each single hotfix installer.
Should be good enough to give an idea ...

The cause is an application bug.
EvenBalance PunkBuster "PnkBstrA" service which creates local communication

The services can be installed and tested with their "pbsvc.exe" tool from

Micro$oft "fixes" such crappy^H^H^H^H^H^Hbuggy applications by using SEH to
catch invalid pointer dereferencing.
If you execute a hand-crafted WS_setsockopt() test case with invalid pointer
value in Windows you will see something like this:

Returned last error is WSAEFAULT (bad pointer value/address supplied).
Solution: either wrap the whole function within structured exception handler
(SEH) or use IsBadReadPtr() on passed pointer and return WSAEFAULT if fishy.

patch which fixes client vs. service SCM API when using named objects
Hello,
there seems to be a misconception in usage of names for named objects in
service control manager API.
Some people might have experienced such situation: wine hangs for several
seconds on startup (when starting services).
I usually disabled autostart type services (except for builtin ones) and the
problems went away.
Lately while fixing Microsoft Visual Studio .NET installers (2002/2003/2005)
this problem became more and more annoying because the installers and VS.NET
depend on some services, namely "debug manager" (service has to be running).
Consider the following snippet with "service_get_event_handle" trace message

When a service is started, named objects are created to internally communicate
data/events from the service process (dispatcher) to client side SCM API and
vice versa.
Unfortunately there exist service proccesses which pass service names to
dispatcher table (StartServiceCtrlDispatcher) not matching the service name on
the client side (registry "Services" key).
--- snip dlls/advapi32/service.c ---
static DWORD WINAPI service_control_dispatcher(LPVOID arg)
{
service_data *service = arg;
LPWSTR name;
HANDLE pipe, event;
TRACE("%p %s\n", service, debugstr_w(service->name));
/* create a pipe to talk to the rest of the world with */
name = service_get_pipe_name(service->name); <--------- *problem*!
pipe = CreateNamedPipeW(name, PIPE_ACCESS_DUPLEX,
PIPE_TYPE_BYTE|PIPE_WAIT, 1, 256, 256, 10000, NULL );
if (pipe==INVALID_HANDLE_VALUE)
ERR("failed to create pipe for %s, error = %d\n",
debugstr_w(service->name), GetLastError());
HeapFree(GetProcessHeap(), 0, name);
/* let the process who started us know we've tried to create a pipe */
event = service_get_event_handle(service->name); <--------- *problem*!
SetEvent(event);
CloseHandle(event);
..
--- snip dlls/advapi32/service.c ---
As result, different named objects are created and signaled so the client side
can't communicate with the service side using named pipe and events.
This leads to infamous timeout problem (30 sec) and service startup failing.
In case of Microsoft Debug Manager the service is called "mdm" (registry).
The service process itself passes "Microsoft Debug Manager" as name to dispatch
table (see first trace).
Problem: how can both sides communicate a "common" name for named objects?
The service dispatcher part on the service side has only dispatch table data
available which doesn't help much.
I thought about this problem and found a feasible solution ... well call it
"hack" whatever.
If the client side API passes the service name in one of the process startup
parameter members before process creation, the service process' dispatcher
routine is able to access this data and create the named objects used for
communication.
I (ab)used startupinfo "title" member because only wine itself make exclusive
use of most service process startup parameters.
If not considered safe, use reserved/undoc fields...
With that patch applied the services in question start fine and can be
controlled using "net" commands.
No more hangs ;-)

FD_WRITE event on socket test program
According to MSDN WSAEventSelect function description
(http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms741576.aspx), FD_WRITE event should
be raised only once after: a) successful connection b) WSAEWOULDBLOCK error
while in nonblocking mode.
MSDN description:
"The FD_WRITE network event is handled slightly differently. An FD_WRITE
network event is recorded when a socket is first connected with
connect/WSAConnect or accepted with accept/WSAAccept, and then after a send
fails with WSAEWOULDBLOCK and buffer space becomes available. Therefore, an
application can assume that sends are possible starting from the first FD_WRITE
network event setting and lasting until a send returns WSAEWOULDBLOCK. After
such a failure the application will find out that sends are again possible when
an FD_WRITE network event is recorded and the associated event object is set."
Unfortunately, it seems that in Wine 0.9.48 (and a few earlier versions too)
this event is raised every time it is possible to write to the socket. I've
created a simple test program (FD_WRITE-test.c) that shows this problem. When
ran on Windows I get:
lNetworkEvents: 2
lNetworkEvents: 0
but when ran on Wine:
lNetworkEvents: 2
lNetworkEvents: 2
which means that FD_WRITE was raised twice and it shouldn't.

the popup with Wine, Wine generates a beep through X11 (I believe this happens
since a WM_SETCURSOR with HTERROR is generated).
A demo program is available as
http://www.cendio.se/~astrand/wine/6-close-popup/. Requires Visual C++ 2005
runtime libraries.

Summary: Windows Media Player 11 setup fails
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.48.
Platform: PC
URL: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/download/A
llDownloads.aspx?displang=en&qstechnology=
OS/Version: Linux
Status: NEW
Keywords: download, Installer
Severity: normal
Priority: P2
Component: wine-misc
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: alex(a)thehandofagony.com
The setup program for Windows Media Player 11 tries to validate Windows if the
version is set to XP, and this fails. There was talk some time ago about an
ntlm_auth patch that would allow the validation, but it fails for me even
though I have the correct version of Samba installed.
However, the installer does not run the Genuine check if the Windows version is
set to Vista. When run thus it does work, however; it tries to create an
instance of a wuapi.dll class, which is not registered in Wine. When I use a
native dll from XP and register it the console output changes saying no
instance could be created.
The installer then says no updates could be found.

Summary: .NET Framework 2.0 Registry Bug
Product: Wine
Version: 0.9.53.
Platform: Other
OS/Version: other
Status: UNCONFIRMED
Severity: major
Priority: P2
Component: -unknown
AssignedTo: wine-bugs(a)winehq.org
ReportedBy: n.tessore(a)gmail.com
When installing the .NET Framework 2.0, the installer creates a registry key
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\Policy\AppPatch\v[RTM_ProductVersion].00000
---
The correct key would be
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\.NETFramework\Policy\AppPatch\v2.0.50727.00000

This leads to seemingly meaningless errors in a number of unexpected places
(ie. normal non-.NET applications), like this one here:

fixme:advapi:RegisterEventSourceW (L"",L".NET Runtime"): stub

for d3dx9_30.dll, which was copied from my other harddrive partition to the
game folder. Game launches easily, showing the splash screen, and then this
error:
DXC Error (DirectX9)
DXC_VideoPlayerOverlayBase: CoCreateInstance failed (VideoMixingRenderer)
Upon clicking "Ok", the game crashes.
