For instance GetLongPathName under Wine doesn't try to fail if you are running with -winver win95, it just works. Adding version checks in the tests just means that some functions won't get tested if you run with the wrong version. wine and aol7 [was: Re: New Winsock2 patch series - now tested]

Hello Martin. I tested your new series of patches with aol7 and I get a crash. Attached is the output of aol7 with the segfault caused by the last series of patches. The wine debugger comes up and says " Unhandled exception: page fault on read access to 0x00000000 in 32bit code... FILE_GetUnixHandleType+0x4c [file.c: 346] in libntdll.dll.so 346 if (((access & GENERIC_READ) && (*flags & FD_FLAG_RECV_SHUTDOWN) ) ||" I've been working on trying to figure out why aol7 doesn't work under wine for a few weeks, but I was using the old code up until now. Actually, with the current wine tree, you can launch aol and login, but you can't get any web content or your buddy list. I think that both of these operations go through aol's web proxies and require a successful handshake with the proxy to succeed. Getting aol to run under wine is a major priority for us here at Lindows because of 1.) the sheer size of the installed base of aol users, which is in the tens of millions, and 2.) the fact that for people who rely on aol for internet access, linux is basically useless. Basically, what I know is that aol7 uses asynchronous sockets, but doesn't seem to use overlapped io, unless you're on a modem. When aol is trying to connect to it's web proxy it only sends one packet out when running under wine, and then after a while gets an ACK packet in response from the proxy. The one packet that gets sent is completely identical to the one sent under windows. Under windows, it actually sends out three packets in rapid succession, and then gets a response from the proxy. The packets sent are using the AIM protocol and can be examined using ethereal under windows and under linux. The handshake between the aol client and the proxy is as follows: client -> AIM packet, family: 0x5472 client -> AIM packet, family: 0x5472 client -> AIM packet, family: 0x7963 proxy -> AIM packet, family: 0x7963 I looked at the return code from ws2_32.send and it claims that the requested number of bytes were sent successfully. Also, there are no obvious errors around the time that the handshake packets are sent. I can send the output of +winsock once I get this new seg fault resolved. I have to thank you for the amazing work you're doing on sockets and overlapped IO, and for any help you would be so generous as to offer me. In any case, there is already wine/test.h, so I think adding some defines in there should be ok (I don't have a copy in front of me, so maybe it's not exactly the right place). It's slow compared to running on a real machine; there's no denying it. In the wine port, you would have the advantage that all the OS calls and graphics are running in native code. I don't have a good measure of how much time bochs spends on graphics, polling for keyboard or mouse events, etc., but it would be pretty easy to make that measurement if you run Bochs with no gui for a while and test the instructions per second. Usually people test the speed by compiling bochs with BX_SHOW_IPS set to 1. Then every second it reports the number of instructions executed per second, in the log file. We frequently talk about ideas for performance improvements, but frankly I think it will be a while (if ever) before we make even a 2x improvement. We do get some benefit from just waiting around, thanks to Moore's Law applied to the machines that people typically run Bochs on. :) Bochs has been focused on emulating entire systems, but it makes perfect sense to used for a user-mode x86 binary emulation system as well. -Bryce

I've been looking for people interested in this kind of painful duty but I didn't see anybody carrying this type of idea anywhere on the Web. I've already mailed some people on that subject and someone told me some people were trying to port WineLib on Sparc (Ulrich Weigand for instance...). Does anybody of you have more information on that ? Did somebody did that somewhere on the globe? Besides that, to achieve my binary compatibility, I was looking at the Bochs emulation. Of course, I'm currently affected by some messages on the web saying the performances are not that great. I have nothing against emulation of machines but I only want to know of it is possible to port the Bochs on my Linux PPC and what performances can I expect (aren't there any benches to help me make my decision ?). Someone said that with a PIII 933, one can reach 3.5MIPS. Who can tell me success stories on that before I start working ? Yann K.

Hi Dimi, It's not perfect because TransmitCommChar should bypass the Linux kernel's internal transmit buffer as well as any pending overlapped operations. The characters should be treated the same way as a flow control character. Unfortunately, that probably requires a hack in the serial driver. Actually I should get all these hacks together (including the one for polling on RTS,DTR,CD,RI deltas) and submit a patch for Linux 2.5.*... in my copious amounts of spare time ;-) Mike Dimitrie O. However, I was not aware of how dwPlatformID was defined (and I miscounted parentheses in your macro). Fail to run visio2000 installation - wineoss.drv.so

IE5.x and Toolbars

This note is just to document what happens in IE5.5 when using the "Favorites" dropdown menu. With the native control, if the mouse hovers over a folder, IE will expand the folder. The expansion is accomplished by the following steps: 1. IE will set a timer on the Toolbar window with id=8001 2. WM_TIMER message for id=8001 on the Toolbar window occurs. 3. Since the Toolbar window is subclassed via comctl.410 (and friends), the subclass WndProc (in native comctl32) somehow calls a part of IE which issues a KillTimer and a PostMessage of message 0xc057 against the main window. 4. When message 0xc057 is dispatched, it issues a few TB_... messages and then eventually issues a CreateWindowExA for the next "BaseBar" window. This then drives the creation of the pop-out window. Since we don't support comctl32.410, .411, .412, and .413, this doesn't work (and will never work till we do support those undocumented routines). <rant> The reason MS can't make a modular Windows is because apparently no one there understands what modular means. The wineshelllink (the script responsible for installing the lnk files in the desktop menu) in the cvs wine assumes, that if you have a .kde directory in your home, then you have kde 1.x installed. And install kde 2.x files only if you have a .kde2 directory in your home folder. But on some systems (eg. RedHat), the kde config files are in .kde in home directory. That is the reason why the .desktop files are not installed on some systems. I have fixed wineshelllink in my cvs copy of wine, but never submitted it, because, I'm not really sure how to fix it to work on all the systems (I dont know how the other packagers do it).
