Fixing NTQueryVirtualMemory once and for all (Was: Borland C++ 5.5 fails on Link, any ideas?)

I think one of the "hacks" just prevented NtQueryVirtualMemory from indicating there was a block of memory crossing the 0x80000000 boundary. Under Windows, it's only on the "Enterprise Edition" operating systems that such a result could be returned from NtQueryVirtualMemory, so this is perhaps not as incorrect as might otherwise be thought. On non EE NT systems, the user address space ends at 0x7fffffff. On Windows 95 series systems, there is a bunch of memory already allocated at 0x7fffffff and down, thus preventing there from ever being a single block of memory (allocated or unallocated) crossing this boundary. On the other hand, there's another problem with NtQueryVirtualMemory - it won't report memory that has been used by native executables and libraries, so that, for example, although the "wine-*" executables (and lots of .so files) take up memory, NtQueryVirtualMemory will not report this (unless this has changed recently). It is not out of the question that an application might use NtQueryVirtualMemory to look for a suitable block to allocate and then explicitly request that block, but find that they've actually hit the location where the WINE code is, so that the request fails. Now on Linux it would be possible to fix NtQueryVirtualMemory to report all allocations by grovelling at /proc/{pid}/maps, but this may not be possible on other systems, or where it is possible will require some other mechanism. So there's really two issues: 1. How should we deal with the 0x80000000 boundary anomaly? 2. Should we attempt to deal with the fact that NtQueryVirtualMemory doesn't report memory used by native executables and libraries?

Well, after fixing Gentoo's winedbg wrapper, I got the backtraces you requested (actually, the whole session, in case it helps). I couldn't tell if it was the heap code, all of the functions seem to be related to threading. I eventually ran --debugmsg +all, but still didn't see any heap-related output. :-/ I attached backtraces of both sessions of winedbg in case that's where +heap made a difference. I will try the patch that others suggested and report back on it's effect. It is different between DirectShow versions. I have never figured out how/when it decides to refresh the cache but he does a good Job. So I suspect it is only an in-session cache that is refreshed every App load (first use). The main REG, that is standard, and that gets written by DllRegisterServer is the HKEY_CLASS_ROOT one.

To be specific, I am in a graphics class where every turnin has to be Windows. :-( Anyways, Borland C++ runs fine until it tries to link the program in question, at which point ilink32.exe just sits there and eats CPU cycles. I've tried letting it run in case it was simply slower than normal due to the Wine layer, but that doesn't seem to be case (I've let it sit for minutes at a time). This occurs no matter how I run it (with wine or either of wineconsole's two modes). I was wondering if there is a way I can help figure out what the problem is so that we can get this bug fixed. If the pointer member of one component is set to point a buffer,but the length member is not big enough,then the component should not be returned, and the length member is set to the value needed. Sibelius 2

Sibelius is an app for scoring music. Sibelius 1 runs fine with wine. Sibelius 2 crashes on startup. When it crashes there is no useful message, only "Unhandled exception". Using winedbg I have found that Sibelius appears to be following a NULL pointer. I haven't yet managed to track down where it's getting the bad pointer from... any suggestions would be appreciated. I've got some time and energy to try to make this work, but first... Has anyone else worked or is some else currently working on this? What did you find? How far did you get? -- Andrew L. You see, the thing about X windows is that they don't have an HWND, for the very simple reason that they are not Windows windows (not a generic name my %$&!@). As such, you will find that in order to do what you are trying to do, you will have to create a HWND representation for windows you don't control. It gets worse - X gets events, not messages. You will have to create message loops for each window you want to create a Win32 identity for, and then figure out for each individual message how to translate it into the X API space. This is not a trivial job to do, and so far as far as I know, Wine has not handled this aspect at all. It just didn't seem important enough to anyone. Wine is currently mostly handling the Windows->X translation, not the other way around. This means that Wine is currently figuring out how to make the Win32 constructs appear inside the X world. Making the X constructs appear in the Win32 world has never came up, as far as I know. catching first chance exception question

I'm looking at how windows deals with invalid parameters in some of the winmm functions and it raises some questions. Sometimes they will check the parameters and return an error code and sometimes they will let a bad parameter cause a first-chance exception and catch it and return an error code. Is it ok to do a simple NULL pointer check and return an error rather than letting it cause an exception and catching it? If not, what's the best way to catch the exception and return the proper error code?

I can generate the authors.c file fine on the command line, but the same command in the Makefile won't generate compilable code due to it terminating the string constant before a UTF-8 character. Wow, fantastic! One thing, could you write up some basic info on the structure of format strings? RPC Update Patch

Hi, I have uploaded the big stubless RPC patch to a website as it is rather large (~120k). You can get it here: http://www.dcs.warwick.ac.uk/~csvmc/rpcrt4_3.diff As you can probably see, a lot of the stuff in this patch is a bit rough around the edges (lack of copyright notice in some files), but it does seem to work for a lot of cases. Rob P.S. It doesn't work for native OLE32 yet because we need some undocumented interfaces in RPCSS.

Hi, I can't really give you any advice on using the X API, but I can tell you that the Win32 and X API are completely different. If you want to support native X apps then you will have to either completely rewrite your Windows program in Linux or you will have to compile the Linux editor as a Winelib app and run it under Wine. I suggest you find a good book on the X API and/or contact the appropriate mailing lists to find out which functions you should use.
